I’ll admit, this idea has existed long before I had a name in mind. I wanted something that was distinctly film-related, but still generic enough that nobody using it would feel tied down.
Gak: The general slang term for gear, tools, props etc. used on a film set. [1]
Factory: A building or group of buildings with facilities for the manufacture of goods.
We went through a lot of ideas, but I eventually thought of the perfect plan: I’ll have someone else figure it out!
To that end, I Slacked my friend Kevin, who works at Chicago-based Creative Firm Everhouse.
After explaining my plan, he came up with several brilliant names, and after shopping them to some friends, Gaktory was decided to meet all the required goals. In his own words:
This name incorporates the term “Gak” to imply an entire facility that is dedicated to creating these things. It’s a name that takes pride in the fact that some people won’t get the use case, because the people who do get it will be buying.
Kevin Hamilton, Everhouse
So I actually have no idea what that means, but the name itself sounded good so we went with it.
For funzies, here are some other ideas we tried, but decided against for one reason or another:
- Cinexus
- Cinewares
- F/Swap (If you own fswap.com DM me I actually really like this one)
- Hotbrick
- Gakstack
- Cinebits
- Rigsmiths
In the end, I’m very happy with Gaktory. It pays homage to an inside joke without being too loud about it, it’s fun to say, and the domain was available.
